TUTORIAL 1: End-of-life Doula Course
“Holding Space with Compassion and Presence”

“A dying person most needs to be shown as much unconditional love as possible. Don’t think you have to be an expert. Be natural, be yourself, be a true friend and the dying person will be reassured that you are with them, as one human being to another.”
Sogyal Rinpoche, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying

Welcome to Tutorial 1: This course is designed to help you build the skills and confidence needed to support people in your community who are facing serious or terminal illness. You’ll also be introduced to the key roles and responsibilities of an end-of-life doula.

What You’ll Learn in Tutorial 1

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Explain what the end-of-life doula model is and how it works.

  2. Reflect on your own personal qualities that will help you in this role.

  3. Understand the connections between the Compassionate Communities approach and the Doula Model of Care.

  4. Describe why cultural humility is essential in this work.

  5. Recognize how implicit biases can impact the care we provide.

TUTORIAL 2:  End-of-life Doula Course
“Compassionate Support for the Dying”

In this Tutorial, we invite you to reflect on a profound truth: death, often seen as something to fear or avoid, can actually bring us closer to the essence of life.

“We realise that perhaps death isn’t the negative thing we have been conditioned to think it is. Death brings the beauty of life into sharp relief. Death empowers us to live consciously from the heart. Death brings us together and inspires conversations that help us put fear aside as we support each other.”
— Ellen Fein, The Art of Dying

These words remind us that death is not an end, but a part of our shared journey – a space where we can show deep compassion, open our hearts, and truly be present for one another.

Tutorial 2 Objectives:
By the end of this tutorial, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate two effective communication techniques when interacting with families during end-of-life care.

  2. Identify the signs and symptoms of active dying.

  3. Understand and recognise cultural factors that influence care, ensuring a respectful and holistic approach for each individual.

TUTORIAL 3:  End-of-life Doula Course
“Respecting Personal Choices at End of Life”

Let’s take a moment to reflect on something Professor Allan Kellehear said:

“Death is a social event with a medical component – not a medical event with a social component.”

It’s a powerful reminder that most of what happens around dying doesn’t take place in hospitals or under professional care. The bigger part – the human part – happens in homes, in communities, among family and friends.

This ties directly into the NEDA core competencies we’re focusing on in this module: Professionalism and Technical Skills.

By the end of this tutorial, you’ll be able to:

  1. Understand the differences between hospital care, hospice, and palliative care

  2. Describe the roles of the different professionals and support people involved in end-of-life and after-death care

  3. Summarise the range of options available for care at the end of life, including choices around how we die

  4. End-of-Life Doulas and continuing your Scope of Practice to Natural Death Care Educators – Wisdom, skills and practical knowledge for hands-on care of the deceased’s body

TUTORIAL 4:  End-of-life Doula Course
“A Doula’s Skills, Roles and Responsibilities”

“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.”
— Coretta Scott King,

This quote beautifully captures the spirit of end-of-life care –  and the heart of this work as a doula. At its core, this path is about showing up with compassion, presence, and deep respect for every person in the circle of care.

Tutorial 4: What You’ll Be Learning

By the end of this tutorial, you’ll be able to:

  1. Recognize patterns that often show up in family dynamics during the end-of-life journey

  2. Identify services and interventions that can support both the dying person and their loved ones

  3. Understand and define your professional boundaries as a doula within the family system

As doulas, we don’t just support the person who is dying – we hold space for the entire care circle: family members, chosen family, friends, and others who are walking this path together.
