Tutorial 1: Holding Space with Compassion & Presence
This Tutorial helps you build the skills and confidence to support people in your community who are living with serious or terminal illness, while introducing the key roles and responsibilities of an end-of-life doula. In Tutorial 1, you will explore the doula model of care, reflect on personal qualities that support this work, examine links to the Compassionate Communities approach, and develop an understanding of cultural humility and how implicit bias can influence the care we provide.
Tutorial 2: Compassionate Support for the Dying
This Tutorial explores how we can show up compassionately for others during times of illness and death, considering the physical, emotional and spiritual dimensions of the dying experience. By understanding these aspects, you will gain tools to offer holistic, person-centred support that honours each individual’s unique needs, while developing a deeper, open-hearted appreciation for the meaning and humanity present even in life’s most challenging moments.
Tutorial 3: Respecting Personal Choices at Life’s End
By the end of this Tutorial, you will understand the differences between hospital, hospice and palliative care; recognise the roles of professionals and support people involved in end-of-life and after-death care and be able to summarise the range of care options available, including choices around how we die. You will also explore the role of end-of-life doulas and how your scope of practice can continue to develop toward becoming a Natural Death Care Educator, integrating knowledge, skills and practical hands-on understanding.
Tutorial 4: Skills and Responsibilities of a Doula
By the end of this Tutorial, you will be able to recognise common patterns within family dynamics during the end-of-life journey, identify services and interventions that support both the dying person and their loved ones and clearly understand your professional boundaries as a doula when working within family systems.

Tutorial 5: Expanding Your Expertise
By the end of this Tutorial, you will be able to create a community resource and action plan, identify appropriate strategies and modalities to support client needs and understand and communicate key care considerations when working with LGBT+ older adults.
Tutorial 6: Sustainable Self-Care
This Tutorial invites you to pause and reconnect with the deeper purpose that called you to this work. Supporting individuals and families through serious illness and the end of life is both deeply meaningful and profoundly human, requiring presence, care and courage. It also invites self-awareness, as this work can surface emotions, memories, and vulnerabilities that deserve compassion and thoughtful attention.
Tutorial 7: End of Life Care Planning
As end-of-life doulas, we support clients to prepare well before a health crisis by engaging in Advance Care Planning, End-of-Life Planning and Family Care Planning. Together, these areas create a holistic approach to anticipating needs and honouring personal wishes. This early, proactive planning is central to the doula role, allowing trust to develop over time while reducing fear, uncertainty and potential suffering through informed, thoughtful choices.
Tutorial 8: Developing Your Practice
In this final Tutorial of your learning journey, “Developing Your Doula Practice”, you will return to the foundations of your work and explore how to step more fully into service. This Tutorial invites reflection on what it means to show up as a professional presence, where to begin, and how to grow into the role with confidence, clarity and care – while serving others with integrity and honouring your own wellbeing and boundaries.
